인생 찬가 (A PSALM OF LIFE )
인생 찬가

슬픈 목소리로 내게 말하지 말라. 인생은 다만 헛된 꿈에 지나지 않는다고!
잠든 영혼은 죽은 것이니 만물은 겉모양 그대로는 아니다.
인생은 진실이다. 인생은 진지하다!
무덤이 인생의 종말이 될 수는 없다. 너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아가라.
이 말은 영혼을 두고 한 말이 아니다.
인생이 가야할 곳, 또한 가는 길은 향락도 비통도 아니다.
내일이 오늘보다 낫도록 저마다 행동하는 그것이 인생이다
예술은 길고 세월은 빨리 간다.
우리의 심장은 튼튼하고 용감하지만 싸맨 북소리처럼
둔하게 무덤으로 가는 장송곡을 치고 있구나.
이 세상 드넓은 싸움터에서 인생의 노영에서 뭘 못하고
쫓기는 짐승같이 되지 말고 싸움에 이기는 영웅이 되라.
아무리 즐거워도 미래를 믿지 말라.
죽은 과거는 그대로 묻어 버려라. 행동하라,
살아 있는 현재에 행동하라.
안에는 마음이, 위에는 하나님이 있다.
위인들의 생애는 우리를 깨우친다.
우리도 장엄한 인생을 이룰 수 있느니 우리가 지나간 시간의
모래 위에 발자국은 남길 수 있다.
그 발자국은 훗날 다른 이가 인생의 장엄한 바다를 건너다가
조난당해 버려진 형제의 눈에 띄어 새로운 용기를 얻게 될 것이다.
우리 모두 일어나 일하자.
어떤 운명에도 굴하지 않은 용기를 가지고. 끊임없이 이루고
도전하면서 일하며 기다림을 배우자.

Tell me not, in mournful numbers, Life is but an empty dream!
- For the soul is dead that slumbers, And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul. Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way; But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day. Art is long, and time is fleeting,
And our heart, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave.
In the world's broad field of battle, In the bivouac of life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife! Trust no future, howe'er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act,
-act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o'erhead!
Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time.
Footprints, that, perhaps another, Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait.
